Padua ......Padua may be the oldest city in northern Italy, if you believe the claims of its 12th-century BC founding by Trojans and is the city of St Anthony and home to Italy ’s second-oldest university.
Local scene
Piazza....Market
Early morning we found ourselves at the market. The fresh fruit, vegetables, cheeses, breads, etc. made me wish I had an apartment so I could take it back and cook. As a restaurant owner I only imagined how sweet it was for the local chefs to purchase their goods every morning for the specialty meals.
Prato della Valle
Padua had so much for us to discover. The Pratta del Castello which measures approximately 400 yards long is a piazza offering a serene area in which to walk peacefully and enjoy the surroundings and some 60 statues. I totally enjoyed the fact that on this tour we were not overwhelmed with mass crowds of tourist but instead got a real feel for Italy and its people.
Depending on the day of the week one can find merchants who bring anything from fruits and vegetables to clothing, household goods and antiques. If you're up for bartering you can score a real deal.
A tram was available and tickets could be purchased for a 75 min. time block. It went both ends of town. NOTE: Immediately upon boarding the tram you must "punch" the time on the end of your ticket. Failure to do so may result in a fine by the "TRAM POLICE" . I actually saw a group of high school boys bolt off the tram when they saw the police boarding. BUT off went the police chasing them down the street.
